and farm viability across Maine!
In 2024, Maine Harvest Bucks program brought over $850,000.00 in direct sales to Maine farmers and market vendors. It makes up an estimated average 10% of vegetable farmers’ sales at participating markets across the state, with it being more than 30-50% of vendors’ sales at some rural markets. Maine Harvest Bucks is a lifeline of stability for Mainers dealing with food insecurity and farmers alike.
Maine Harvest Bucks is the only program that supports existing markets and is for direct, producer-to-consumer sales. This helps foster more than just food access for low-income shoppers. Farmers' get the whole retail price of their sales and set their own prices. Shoppers get to meet farmers and other community members in person, and learn about other resources availalble - from nutrition education to additional food access programming.
More Mainers get dignified, equitable access to the world-class food available at the farmers' market, and farmers get paid for their hard work! This program improves public health, community building, strengthens our local food system, and increases Maine farmers' and food producers' sales so that they can sustain their businesses.
